Though a large portion of the society seems to have already accepted homosexuality already, as evidenced by the acceptance of some states of same sex marriage, there are still a lot of communities or groups that are against it. Though these groups accept the homosexuals as they are, what they don’t accept are the practices that homosexuals do that may be detrimental to their health.
A lot of workshops and seminars have already been given to the youth and other members of the population to address these concerns, especially about the sexual practices of homosexuals. Some of these sexual practices that may pose health risks to the homosexuals are fisting and anal sex. Fisting is the insertion of foreign objects into the anus, which may cause immunosuppressing infections like HIV (Human Immunodeficiency virus), Hepatitis B and other sexually transmitted diseases.
Though uncommon, hemorrhoids and gay health (homosexuality) are now being linked because of their unhealthy sexual practices. As mentioned earlier, two of these causes are fisting and anal sex. These two practices can lead to anorectal trauma, which may promote inflammation and bleeding. Once inflamed, the veins in the anorectal area can become swollen and tender, predisposing these veins to developing a haemorrhoid. Bleeding, on the other hand, indicates breach of the protective barrier of the anus that can predispose one to the infections mentioned earlier.
How does anal sex cause hemorrhoids? The anus is different from the vagina anatomically and functionally. Anatomically, the vagina is lined by an epithelium that protects it from trauma and friction, and is easily stretched, which is evident when a woman gives birth through normal spontaneous delivery. The anus, on the other hand, is composed of delicate muscles and tissues that are only capable of supporting faecal material. Penetration of the anus by any other materials or body part can destroy the integrity of the anal supporting structures and sphincters that control the opening and closing of the anus.
These sphincters are also supported by a collection of veins underneath. These veins serve as cushion to protect the sphincters from damage and absorb the shock that the sphincters receive. To increase its cushioning functions, what the veins do is to collect more blood and swell. The veins revert back to normal in normal circumstances. When the trauma to the sphincters and the surrounding tissues become chronic, the veins become permanently swollen. Because of these mechanisms, plus the reflex of the anus to push out the material that enters it, increases the abdominal strain and pressure, resulting to a haemorrhoid.
Chronic irritation and engorgement of these veins result to hemorrhoids and the health of the homosexual is compromised due to these unsafe sexual practices. In truth, there are no ways to avoid therisks among those who perform anal sex and fisting. Though anal lubrication and control in anal sex can help in reducing the friction, shock and irritation in the anus, one cannot still avoid the development of these problems. What homosexuals can do to prevent these health risks is to avoid these unhealthy practices.
