The Mediterranean Cypress is a large tree with a towering height of almost a hundred feet and is believed to have originated from Syria and Persia. It is known for its evergreen leaves, strong trunk, extensive root growth, and can live up to an extraordinary age.
Its Latin name is cupressus sempervirens (from the cupressaceae family). Its common names are: mediterranean cypress, Italian cypress, Tuscan cypress, graveyard cypress, pencil pine and evergreen cypress.
During the ancient times, people use the Mediterranean Cypress as treatment for fever, parasites, and circulatory problems. Its young branches and leaves are harvested because it contains vasoconstrictive properties that can help cure circulatory illnesses such as varicose veins. The use of Mediterranean cypress to cure hemorrhoids has been deemed effective during these times.
Unlike the Cypress Tree’s immortal-like characteristics, the human body does wear and tear. In the rectal and anal area, clumps of tissues containing blood vessels, muscles, and elastic fibers are called hemorrhoids. Straining during bowel movement, constipation, and pregnancy can make the hemorrhoids swell. Swollen hemorrhoids induce a lot of pain. Other symptoms may include bleeding and itching around the anal area. Hemorrhoids are also prone to infection because of the fecal matter coming in contact with it. Severe cases of this disease, which include protrusions, may need surgery as treatment.
Certain herbs and plants are proven by clinicians as safe and effective. Due to this, people are now opting for traditional ways of treating illnesses because it is cheaper and readily available. Plant parts such as the roots, stems, leaves, and flowers are being prepared in various ways in order to extract its essential oils. Several preparations were developed for Mediterranean cypress to cure hemorrhoids, and one of them is via a tonic.
One way of treating inflamed hemorrhoids is the use of the Cypress tree’s leaves through a tonic solution. Mediterranean cypress is applied topically on the affected area as a tonic. Tonics are prepared by soaking the leaves in hot water for 10-15 minutes. Hot water acts as an agent that helps the plant release its essential oils. The essential oils of the Mediterranean Cypress have vasoconstrictive properties that helps alleviate swelling. To purify the tonic, it is recommended to filter the water using a strainer or clean cheese cloth. The freshly strained tonic may be stored in a glass jar or reusable glass bottle and kept in a dry cool place.
There are several ways on how to use the tonic. First, it can be topically applied on the affected area using a clean cotton ball. It is then left to dry for 10 to 15 minutes. The cooling effect of the tonic provides immediate comfort from pain. Another way of using the tonic is by incorporating it in the sitz bath. The warmth of the water and the essential oils found in the tonic works together on alleviating pain and discomfort.
Prior to using the herbal tonic, it is best to check for any allergic reactions. Allergy tests can be done by dabbing a small amount of the tonic on the arm. Reactions like itching, redness, and rashes should be observed. If these reactions are present, it is not recommended to continue using the tonic. Also, it is a must to see a doctor because severe cases of the hemorrhoids need more special medical attention and treatment.
