Xylocaine Jelly Defined
Acting as a local anesthetic, Xylocaine Jelly is mostly used as a topical medication which blocks nerve that signals pain receptors in the body. It is a numbing medication that is commonly used in different conditions. Other than its jelly form, Xylocaine is also used as a spinal anesthetic for major and minor surgical procedures. This has been proven to be an effective numbing medication widely used in different parts of the world.
Xylocaine (also known as Lidocaine), cannot be bought over the counter as the proper dosage amount must be applied to ensure its effectiveness. Moreover, a licensed physician should apply this medication to the affected area. Its effect should take within 3 – 5 minutes and lasts for a couple of hours.
Additionally, this is also used as a lubricant for catheterization and many other procedures. In ample amounts, Xylocaine Jelly doesn’t seem to have side effects, but when applied in large amounts. A maximum of 4 doses should be applied within the span of 24 hours. Larger doses may require your physician’s approval to avoid serious adverse effects.
For special conditions, this prescription drug can be given to individuals requiring this medication at home. However, do not use this topical medication more than what your physician has prescribed you. As listed above, more than 4 doses every 24 hours is not recommended.
Other conditions requiring topical application of Lidocaine include insect bites, poison ivy, scratches, minor cuts, burns, skin irritations and many others.
Will Xylocaine Even Help with the Condition?
Since Xylocaine’s effect is to produce numbness within the applied area, this can also be done with hemorrhoids, or also known as piles. It may cause swelling, itching, burning sensation and pain when left untreated.
